Sigma 24mm at the Art Museum
Posted By: 7.62lew, 07-28-2008, 08:25 PM

One I took a while back at the Art Museum in Raleigh North Carolina, USA. Adjusted in Gimp. Taken in ambient light, no flash. Thanks for looking.

Great phote. I would have cropped a little on the right side. I am still learning the tricks of cropping... found at times it makes the picture and too much takes it away. This is always a great place to get feed back. JIMBO

Yeah, I think I see what you mean. Get rid of the edge of the next painting at the far right frame like this? or did you have something else in mind?

Thanks,

How did you sneak a camera in there? I usually have a security guard tapping me on the shoulder as soon as they see me pull out so much as a point and shoot at the museums I've been to...

They didn't give me any trouble at all. I did not use the flash, and I did not take photo's in the area's that said "no photography". I actually had one of the guards showing me some paintings that he thought I may want to get pictures of. All in all a very nice visit.

I did get the airport police called on me once though. I was at the airport "park and ride" taking photo's of aircraft on approach (I love airplanes) and one of the passengers waiting for the shuttle, got nervous and called the police. They wanted to know what I was doing and wanted to see the pictures. After I explained, they were fine with it, but I do avoid the "park and ride" now. I stick with the official observation decks when taking photo's, to avoid "making people nervous".

They'd a been a little more nervous if they knew you called yourself 7.62lew (full metal jacket! )

BTW I really like the photo, and totally agree on the crop. It's a keeper.

I like the shot. somehow the people and the colour of their clothing just fit the painting as well. The vignette looks great. New crop helps as well. Good job.

Great shot.

I had a similar experience in DC. A guard approached me, asking what I was taking pictures of. I thought he was about to make me leave / delete them. Turns out he wanted to suggest some similar stuff.

Made me stop and look, always the sign of a great image. Crop improves it even more.

If I want to take pictures in a museum I usually ask at the front desk what there policy is. Many will let you take non-flash snaps of works in their collection. Items on loan usually are off limits. I'm not sure what the laws are on that, but would seem that taking pictures of private property within an enclosed space can be regulated by the owner. The test would be if a they could regulate photography of something outside of the museum walls, in a sculpture garden for example.

Thanks for the kind feedback!

I was surprised at how well the photo's turned out, due to the low light and all. The Sigma 24mm Superwide II seems like a really good lens, especially for what I paid for it. Gotta love the ability to use the older lenses. Thanks Pentax!
