Supermoon - Countdown
Lens: TS APO 480 mm Camera: Pentax K3 II Photo Location: Ascheberg, Germany ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/80s Aperture: F5.8
Posted By: Pete_XL, 11-13-2016, 11:43 AM

Tomorrow afternoon is Supermoon-Time. The moon is at its nearest distance to earth since 70 years.I attached a 480 mm telescope to my K3 II and shot it (nearly full) near our church tower shortly after moonrise this evening, 4 degrees above the horizon.

I will shooting the supermoon tonight here in Perth, Western australia. I have a K-3 with a tamron 70-200 with 1.4 teleconverter on a weighted tripod.

Best settings for this camera?

Use a tripod and the built in 2 s timer and/or a remote control. Turn of the image stabilizer if you use a tripod. I would start with 1/80 and F5.6-6.3 at ISO 200-400 and variate exposure time. Do test shots and look at the histogram to not white-out the moon. Exposure no longer that 1/60s - the moon is fast! Remember that the converter multiplies also your minimal F-Stop value. But it is better to come out a bit darker than to overexpose - the full moon is very bright. Shoot in RAW (PEF or DNG). Do an exact focus on the moon using the 10x focus loupe because if you are out of focus you can expect color fringing at the moons edge. Remember that the converter multiplies also your F-Stop.

Good luck - I would like to see the result

If you can, pick a site where you can catch it low to the horizon, it will appear even larger due to atmospheric magnification.😀

Set the mode dialer to MANUAL (M). Chose the aperture with the back wheel, set the ISO value and vary the exposure time with the front wheel.
The timer is set with the Up-Arrow on the camera back in the menu that apperars after you push that arrow. Push arrows up -> right -> down ->right
Upload the images to the computer with an USB cable.
If in doubt you should read the manual. If you have not printout it is availlable in the internet.

My K3 has a USB3 port right above the HDMI port.
