First time trying HDR
Posted By: Redmanll34, 07-29-2008, 06:52 PM

So I decided to try my luck with some HDR shots, I'm not sure how I did. I wish I had my Tripod with me, next time. Let me know what you think please.

Thanks
Tom

Also want to mention these were shot on my new lenses, which are Tamron AF 17-50 f/2.8 and AF 18-250 f/3.5-6.3. Both lenses seem to take great pictures and am happy I purchased both. *Added a new picture below*

I think it looks good Tom - pretty natural looking.

Haha, no I was just trying to get it to look more like I saw it, Sky is blue, not blown and just to add a little more contrast.

I think Daacon said it best natural. And that is what I was trying to get it to look like.

Thanks for the comments
Tom

This is by far the best use of HDR I've ever seen. It just looks like you had good light rather than looking over-processed and weird like most HDR I've seen. It's funny, with HDR in the title I almost didn't click it... Good job.

It is a very nice photo, very natural looking. I realize that this is really a more realistic usage of HDR methods than the surrealistic stuff at places like stuckincustoms.com. The thing is, I like that stuff, too, at least some of the time.

Is there a better term than HDR to describe both this realistic type of picture as well as the surrealistic stuff?

Maybe I'm not doing this HDR stuff right or maybe i just rather it this way. Either way I like the look,.

Newport I did process one that I think you will like as well, let me know.

I do like it!

I like them both. One is extremely realistic; the other surrealistic. They're both "HDR," though. Does that seem right to you?

Newport, I think that HDR is misunderstood or just used differently. I feel it is a set of different exposures that when combined gives you the best range of highlights and shadows, creating or atleast should create a natural feeling.

Now you can use tone mapping to add surreal effects to the photo like in the second one. But my true feeling of High dynamic range is the ablity to get all the shadows and highlights combined as said before to create the natural look.

I think it is a personal preference type thing. I tend to gravitate towards the "natural" but as you do, I like the surreal look if not over done.

my 2 cents

I find it just takes too much time and effort to attempt to learn and then correct, darken, lighten, or any other manipulation, in PP. I would rather one simple natural look. All my tecniques are done in camera just like in the slide days. Go to the Luminous-Landscape.com site and there you will find a new DNG standard created by Adobe so that their software can use any cameras raw profile. Interesting.

Nice work!

What software did you use? I am considering buying Dynamic PHOTO HDR and Photo Elements as a combo to get into HDR and photo editing. I can not affore Adobe Photoshop. What are your thoughts on this>

I used photmatic pro to do these shots and then brought it in PS CS2 for a few minor changes. I don't like PS HDR application. Not sure on the programs you listed I haven't used either.
