My grandson's team (Kitchener Major Bantam AA) played a game last night against the Woodstock Jr. Navy Vets. The game was played at the Southwood (Red) Arena in Woodstock, Ontario. This a very nice rink with seating for 1800 spectators, decent lighting (by arena standards) and no nets around the ice, which makes it a good place for shooting ice hockey.
I took along my K3 with DA*300, as well as my DA*50-135mm, I've been reading, and watching on Youtube, lots of articles on sport photography and the need to use a fairly high shutter speed to freeze the action, even at the cost of increased noise. So, I went for it and shot at 1/1000s, F4 and ISO 6400 with the DA*300 from up in the stands. I used the DA* 50-135mm for shooting through the glass in the corners.
Certainly the images straight from the camera are very noisy, but after doing some modest noise reduction in ACR and downsizing to 2000x1333 pixels, the results are acceptable to me. The images just go on Flickr for the boys to check out, or get printed as 4x6's, so I don't find the noise objectionable. If I was making large prints I'm sure it would be a different story.
Anyway here some images from the game.
