Lübeck From 36 Angles
Photo Location: Lübeck, Germany
Posted By: Jens Lyn IV, 12-15-2016, 05:50 PM

I visited Lübeck in December 2015, and now I've done it again. I brought 3 cameras this time, so I left my tripod at home to lighten the load a bit. Lesson learned: the K-1 has really good image stabilisation. Other lessons learned: Lübeck loves marzipan to a fault, and Ordnung muss sein. More on this below.

Holstentor, the emblem of Lübeck. This photo is perfectly level, it's the building that's crooked.
K-3 with D-FA 100 WR @ f/2.8, 1/125 s, ISO 100, CPL filter

Six of the Seven Towers (one obscured behind another), as seen from the roof of a car park. From left to right: Dom (Cathedral) behind Aegidienkirche (Church of St. Giles), Petrikirche (Church of St. Peter), Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church), Jakobikirche (Church of St. Jacob). Klughafenbrücke in the foreground.
K-3 with SMC DA 15 Ltd @ f/8, 1/125 s, ISO 100, tonemapped

Edifis would have loved this building. The passage on the right is comically tiny.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/50 s, ISO 125

A view from the tower of the Petrikirche. Marienkirche left, market and town hall centre.
K-3 with SMC DA 15 Ltd @ f/11, 1/60 s, ISO 100, tonemapped

Town hall detail, with the Katharinenkirche (St. Catherine's Church) in the background.
K-3 with D-FA 100 WR @ f/5.6, 1/1000 s, ISO 100

Looking south towards the cathedral.
K-3 with SMC DA 15 Ltd @ f/13, 1/180 s, ISO 100, tonemapped

Detail from the only really seedy alley I could find in the old town, which is otherwise universally idyllic.
K-3 with SMC DA 15 Ltd @ f/5.6, 1/10 s, ISO 100

Ordnung muss sein, exhibit A: every gull I met was on its best behaviour. The gulls in Denmark are vicious, ruthless, savage monsters.
K-1 with D-FA 100 WR @ f/2.8, 1/350 s, ISO 100

Back on the car park roof. Burgtor top left.
K-1 with D-FA 100 WR @ f/11, 1/45 s, ISO 100

Left to right: Petrikirche, Marienkirche, Katharinenkirche.
K-1 with D-FA 100 WR @ f/5.6, 1/180 s, ISO 100

On the Marienbrücke. Left to right: Marienkirche, Petrikirche, cathedral.
K-1 with DA* 55 @ f/5.6, 1/125 s, ISO 100

Left to right: Jakobikirche, Winkelturm, Marienkirche, Petrikirche.
K-1 with DA* 55 @ f/5.6, 1/4000 s, ISO 100, tonemapped

The Winkelturm is a variant of the Hochbunker above-ground air raid shelters. Jakobikirche in the background.
K-1 with DA* 55 @ f/5.6, 1/350 s, ISO 100

Artyfarty nonsense interlude: moss and line tensioners.
K-1 with DA* 55 @ f/1.4, 1/1000 s, ISO 100

Yes, that is the Marienkirche in the background.
Q with 01 @ f/4, 1/2000 s, ISO 125

K-3 with D-FA 100 WR @ f/5.6, 1/90 s, ISO 100

The stampede Christmas Market. I found a brief lull in the crowds and pounced.
K-3 with SMC DA 15 Ltd @ f/13, 1/4 s, ISO 1600

A more typical scene from the notorious tourist magnet.
K-3 with SMC DA 15 Ltd @ f/13, 1/4 s, ISO 1600

The only winning move in this game is to accept the photobomb as part of the composition. Or something.
K-3 with SMC DA 15 Ltd @ f/13, 1/4 s, ISO 2200

K-1 with DA* 55 @ f/1.4, 1/10 s, ISO 100

The Petrikirche from below.

The Christmas Market and town hall from the tower of the Petrikirche.
K-1 with D-FA 100 WR @ f/2.8, 1/4 s, ISO 200

The Aegidienkirche.

The cathedral, illuminated, behind the Roman Catholic Propsteikirche Herz Jesu (Sacred Heart Church).

But wait, there's more. Lübeck is home to marzipan manufacturer J. G. Niederegger GmbH & Co. KG, and the Marzipan-Speicher store sells all manner of marzipan products:

Pure marzipan.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/50 s, ISO 125

A 400 g marcipan loaf coated in chocolate.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/50 s, ISO 125

A 1 kg marzipan pig.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/40 s, ISO 125

Instant hot cocoa with marzipan.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/40 s, ISO 125

Instant cappuccino with marzipan.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/50 s, ISO 125

Marzipan cream liqueur.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/60 s, ISO 125

Honey with marzipan.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/40 s, ISO 125

Strawberry jam. With marzipan.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/50 s, ISO 125

Marzipan noodles...
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/15 s, ISO 125

"Marzipan soap (not edible)"
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/20 s, ISO 125

Finally, to end on a brown note:

Ordnung muss sein, exhibit B: hotel staff always left the end of the toilet roll neatly folded like a tie.
Q with 01 @ f/2.8, 1/30 s, ISO 125

Last year's pictures can be found here.
