A gliding pelican
Lens: Sigma 70-300 Camera: K20D Photo Location: Metung, Victoria

I was going through some of my older images, and found this one shot with my K20D. " Belle " doesn't get much of a workout these days, but she was a great camera for the day. Thanks for taking a look. EDIT - Lost some resolution with the upload, apologies.

Nice capture. They are so graceful in the air. I like to watch them on a thermal. No wing beats, just a steady upward spiral until they can see their objective. Then they just set their wings and go. On the edge of the range here I have seen them climb to enormous heights before peeling off in a glide for water about 40 km away.

Thanks Pete. Appreciate the fine comments. On looking at the post, I lost some resolution, and added an EDIT. To see a pelican flying, and then walking, you would swear they were two different birds.

Thank you very much EM. I was very lucky that day as this bird was circling, which gave me a couple of tries at getting it.

A favourite subject of mine. They are so graceful in the air and so different on land as you observe. Always photogenic.

Thanks KD. Cold and probably a bit too windy as well. They can have a wingspan between 2.5 and 3 meters ( 8'2" to 9'10" ).

Aye over the last few days we've had winds of 60 to 90mph, so perhaps they're our ones you've now got there.

I wish that I could say Norwegian was my 2nd language, but the truth is, I use a translator on my computer Janse. I think some things should be said in the readers native language so there is no confusion as to what is meant.

Really nice composition - I wish I could capture birds flying, but that skill doesn't seem to be in mental toolbox. So my hat is off to you.

I enjoy watching pelicans, which can be ungainly and clumsy one moment, and truly graceful (as in your great shot) the next.

Thank you very much for the kind comments Jer. I was lucky though, as I told EM, because this beauty was circling and I got 3 bites at the cherry.
