Catching the weeds
Posted By: gawan, 08-02-2008, 04:37 PM

Most of the vegetation photographs I have taken are flowers, trees, and other distinct objects. But I always have admired the big grass, hay, and other such humble vegetation that glows in the sun and waves in the wind.

Some how these seem to be hard to catch in a photo, they always seem to miss that "thing", that caught the eye.

Here are two attempts, they required some photoshoping to approximate what my eyes saw! What do you think? Appreciate also to see your hay/grass/weed pics.

Well done Georg - yes the poor high grass seems to be missed as a photogenic opportunity however we think alike.

Thanks Dave! One of my observations is that these subjects need a good contrast and added saturation to get them pop out a little in a photo.

Daacon, gawan

Nice shots guys! I lived in Manitoba for seventeen years and the sight of a wheat field that extends to the horizon in the morning light is something you don’t forget. It is a subtle sort of beauty that grows on you and can be difficult to capture. I think I have some stuff on slides somewhere but have yet to convert it. The fields and weed patches have a lot to offer if we take the time to look. We may have a theme going here. I’ll take my macro back to the weed patch tomorrow and see what I can find.

Somewhat relevant?

Not wheat or anything but highish meadow grass in the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia USA against an evening sky.

Neat theme. You're right, this kind of vegetation is difficult to capture well but mesmerizing to watch as it sways and ripples with the wind.

Thanks Mel, silhouettes is definitely one essential means to get these humble ones in the centre of attraction!
