Old Post town Tsumago, Kiso Valley Japan

Some shots for a travel brochure of the historic town of Tsumago.
The picture with the Japanese sign 〒 stands for Post (Office) and is the old historic post office. The postie makes his daily deliveries like they did a long time ago. Only the wrist watch is modern.

Nakasendo is one of the 5 highways constructed in Japan during the Edo Period (1603 - 1868). Connecting Edo (old Tokyo) and Kyoto, it has 69 post towns along its way. The post towns of Magome and Tsumago are situated about midway along the old road. Magome is known for its beautiful cobbled slopes. Tsumago showcases a stunning, traditional townscape - thanks to the conservation efforts started in the early 1970's - with many buildings from the Edo Period. Electric poles have been buried and advertising signboards banished.

It certainly is a lot different from old cities in the west. The dark timber buildings, particularly the ones in the shade, and the very harsh mid day sun was challenging.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Now you know where you will be going on your next trip to Japan. And while you are in the neighborhood (more or less) a visit to Shirakawa-gō, an historic village in the Ōno District (Gifu Prefecture) is highly recommended. I spent a whole day there and took lots of photos.

Cheers
