This brings back some painful memories of when I 'found' a nest of ground wasps in a planter while doing some yard work.

These ones build a honeycomb shaped nest out of a papery material which are usually found under the eaves etc. Usually docile unless you disturb their nest.

Or not. Had to clean them out this summer as they were attacking without provocation. Getting close enough to take this photo would've been enough.

Are you sure that's a paper wasp? All the paper wasps I've seen are smaller and darker than this, yet the European Wasps I've seen that have a clumping nest have a head like this and are yellow.

I could be wrong as I don't live in WA, but here's something on this subject that might interest you.

Either way, an excellent capture, I really like the composition with the wasp's head looking into centre frame.

Back in 1969 builders were stripping the roof off an old building when one of them dislodged a wasps nest, I have never seen scaffolding evacuated so fast before or since.

Are you sure that's a paper wasp? All the paper wasps I've seen are smaller and darker than this, yet the European Wasps I've seen that have a clumping nest have a head like this and are yellow.

I could be wrong as I don't live in WA, but here's something on this subject that might interest you.

Yes, definitely a Paperwasp, we have two species here, one is brown and yellow and the other is black and yellow in colour. Paperwasps will fly with their legs hanging down whereas the European wasp flies with it's legs tucked up.

We have the brown (and black) paper wasps here. A yellow wasp here would be a ground nesting yellow jacket, and just about the only wasp to be very afraid of, since they are likely to attack by the scores at a time. I try to be kind to moles, since they are one of the best predators of yellow jacket nests and love to eat their larvae.

actually I like wasps as long as I don't have to work around them

the old guys I worked with were of the opinion that when you had to move the wasps along that knocking down the nest wasn't enough
if you didn't scrape off the attaching nub the insects would rebuild
experience proved them correct
