We have two different families of Pukekos that live near and on our property (no water anywhere close). They come up to the house backdoor, dig up and eat plants from the garden and are a bloody nuisance.

Nice shot! I guess their behaviour might have changed in New Zealand? I've never seen a Purple Swamphen far from water.

Yeah, the closest water is a stream about a kilometer away. They don't seem to travel that far and they nest in a shelter belt between us and the orchard next door.

If you want some I'm sure that there are a lot of people around here who would be happy to donate as many as you will take

Swamphen

Rob,
see what you have started ?

Out come all the Swamphen pictures.
This one followed me around for at least 30m, couldn't shake it off. Guess its my animal magnetism.
(More likely the sandwich I was holding)

I'm pretty sure that Purple Swamphens aren't an endangered species in Oz. I don't know how common the NZ species might be, but I gather it's not in trouble either.

Nice shot! I've never been stalked by one for food, but then I'm not usually eating in their vicinity! Here's another shot I took a while back.
