A ship in bad light
Posted By: mingdie, 08-06-2008, 02:37 AM

On a visit to Sweden recently we visited Wasa the battle ship that sank on her maiden voyage 1628 and was salvaged in 1961. It is very dark in the museum and the flash on the camera is not much use on a 61m long boat. Before the trip I got hold of a Pentax M 50mm 1.4 and I decided to give it a go. Without SR on my Pentax DL I downed two cups of strong coffee to relax my hands and this is the result. Not the best photos but the best I could do handheld at ISO 1600 and good enough for the family to remember by.

fascinating shots! I have read about the Wasa, thanks for the images. Great results under difficult circumstances.

These are very good! I actually like the lighting in them. It gives the wood a very rich tone.

Thank you guys.
It was amazing how many people with their DSLR cameras trying to take photos with the flash. Many of them looked surpriced when the screen showed a very dark almost black photo. When I spoke to a couple of them and suggested a better lens they didn't know what I was talking about. This suggest to me that most DSLRs are sold to people who use it with only the kit lens as a big p/s.

Cheers

These are terrific, Eddie - the 4th one is outstanding. You know, I still prefer the look of my 6 mpx DS2 at ISO 800-1600 over that of my K10D - even after PP. I still travel with the DS2 or take it when I'm expecting a lot of low light shooting.

Great job - I've always wanted to see the Wasa after reading about it in National Geographic when I was a boy (a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away).

Eddie, thanks for sharing these fantastic photos. In fact, there are too many people (mostly don't know better) use the DSLR as if it is a P&S camera. And their pictures are of course disappointing and they accept that because many were told they need the L glass (and more money of course) to get a good picture.

nice

that ropework is art! fantastic shots but if I had 2 cups of strong coffee my hands would be a blur let alone the photos. Maybe only Swedish people would use coffee to calm down!

OMG, posting images taken at 1600 ISO. Haven't you heard about the terrible noise problems with Pentax? What a disgrace.

Seriously, great shots, thanks for posting, well done.
