Here's looking at you...
Posted By: clarenceclose, 02-16-2007, 09:34 PM

Was at my feet when I was 1/2 mile up overlooking the desert floor. Thankfully there was a cold wind blowing and he really was only interested in getting away.

C&C appreciated.

Great capture.

You did a good job on the out-of-bounds PP, but I don't think the snake's pose quite works as his head is mostly back in bounds. Given the subject, I think having the head as the main OOB object is almost required. Maybe having the snake OOB overlapping most or all of the colored part of the frame on the right would help. It's already nearly touching it.

The frame might work better w/o the outer black rim and maybe add some texture in the colored area.

The snake's face seem rather indistict which also limits the impact of this image. Maybe some careful burning would help.

The shadow in the LL is maybe too blue and too different from the warmer shadows on the snake's body.

Just some thoughts to make a good image potentially even better.

-Mark

Edit: It just occured to me why the OOB seems so odd. The frame shape doesn't match the "mat".
Thus it's not as believable that the snake is crawling out of the picture.

I was thinking of a horizontal slit, of the rocks, just slightly bigger than the snakes head, but there aren't enough rocks on the sides of him to pull it off unless you wanted to try to clone them in. Still great shot and PP!

Anything shorter than a 600mm lens is the wrong lens to be using on this thing. At least for me that would still put me to close to it.

Just a pinch more white border on the right of the snake would make it perfect! I need to figure out how make effects like that in PSP...

Love it as always, Clarence!

Great image to begin with and I like your pp treatment. I took a class and learned how to do this. Need to look up my notes because my memory is the pits! Nice work.

Though "snakes" not my favourite object for photographing...
Even very not favourite object...

Photo and idea of a photoframework (color) - it is very good! But here " the cut photo " in a framework is looked is disproportionate (weighs in space)... Even the shadow is necessary to counterbalance a composition...

I appreciate this thinking. Another PP I did, rather than using a white background was to use a black background which actually popped the snake better, IMHO.

Not quite sure how to make the frame shape match the matte unless you mean the color of the frame being closer to the matte so it appears the snake is more 'out of the photo'.

Note to Ken: This snake was taken with my Optio 550 so I was about 3 feet away, just out of striking range. It wasn't a problem though, as I said the snake really only wanted to get away. Considering my past appetite for the strange and unusual dishes, this was probably a wise choice on his part.
