My new "macro" lens & a rose!
Posted By: GLThorne, 02-16-2007, 10:34 PM

While out an about, I decided to hit one of the local pawn shops that actually specializes in photo equipment. Walked away with a brand new Manfrotto mono-pod for $12. Never opened. Looked it up and it goes for $59.

Another neat item I found, was my new "macro lens". Well, actually it's a macro filter that screws on just like any other filter. This shot was taken of one of my wife's roses and the 18-55mm kit lens. Only thing is that the filter is a 58MM and the lens is a 52mm, so I'm holding it up there. I couldn't remember which it was in the store but for $5............ Porters carries these so I might get one until I decide which macro I want. Leaning towards the Tamron AF90 2.8.

Until then, comments welcome on this little find.......

Thank you sir. I actually thought it turned out pretty good for a some-what cheap item. More so than I expected.

I'll add that there's no crop on this as well.

South Carolina must have some really mild weather for there to be roses in winter!

Intense! That makes me want a macro filter!

This is beautiful. Shows that a close up filter and the kit lens can do a fine job. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Guys! Yep - Valentines from our 1 yr. old. He's mama's boy!! Took my spot! But that's ok! "Dada" had to spot him some green for the purchase!

It's cool today - around 35 with the wind chill. No roses out there yet.

I agree, the kit lens and this macro filter works pretty good. Porters has a kit with +1, +2 & +4 Close-up Filters and a +8 Macro Filter for $26.99 for the 18-55 kit. I'll post more once I get one that fits so I don't have to hold up against the lense.

Hope everyone has a great weekend....

" There is some rose much " in a composition of a photo. It "presses" and prevents perception...

I think he's saying you were too close. Back off a little bit to see more of it to make the rose look like one.

I agree that is what he is saying. I can't say that I agree with it though. I love the tight shot the way it is.

Thanks Guys! I thought the "aire" of the picture was relaying a true macro feeling not too mention that the little $5-buck wonder ended up capturing a very detailed picture.

I'll post more once I get the correct size as I ordered them, along with a new Tamron 70-300 Di LD lenses yesterday.

Hi Greg, loved your shot. Very nice sharp detail for an inexpensive close up filter, I didn't know they gave that kind of defination. Nice capture, especially one handed! I just did a quick check at B&H, and you can get a step up ring for that filter for about $6 and up. You might want to check on it. I can heartily recommend the Tamron 90 macro, excellent lens.
