Royal Gorge Bridge
Posted By: Bob Harris, 03-06-2017, 08:50 PM

Shown is the Royal Gorge Bridge which is about 1/4 mile long and is close to 1,000 foot above the Arkansas River. It is one of the highest suspension bridges in the US, and was carved by the Arkansas River over millions of years. The canyon itself is 1,250' at it's deepest and about 50' wide, what makes it a bit different than Grand Canyon is this canyon is formed through solid granite, not softer materials such as sandstone and shale. The Arkansas River is the 5th longest river in the US and runs through our town, yep a river runs through it.

Great shot, buddy, and great memories. The last time I walked across that bridge, I was carrying a big Domke bag with an MX, an LX and a gang of lenses and filters. No way I'd lug all that stuff nowadays!

Lot's of marvelous places in Colorado; you picked a terrific state to settle for a while. Unfortunately, I haven't been there in 15 or 16 years. The last time was in Estes Park where I gave a lecture at a scientific gathering on biomaterials. I would have much preferred to be up on the Trail Ridge Road.

When we traveled over the more than ten years in the motorhome we always went to where it was warm, no snow or cold for us, we were true Snow Birds. When we moved here to Canon, which actually has quite good weather and not a lot of snow, I was quite excited to photograph the beauty that snow produces so I'll be sharing a lot of snow pictures here for awhile. You know if a miner back in the day had a trail or road to get their product down to the towns to process, the towns have now put a label or name on it. We've got several here which go up to the Cripple Creek mining areas and now we can comfortably but carefully travel in our vehicles upon them.

Beautiful photo! With my fear of heights, I don't think I'd like crossing that bridge!

a coworker had a stock question for us scaredy cats....
