Plants in Japan, particularly those in gardens are not allowed to grow naturally into their own shape, rather they are highly sculptured. The most notable in Japanese gardens are the sculptured conifer trees. Niwaki is the descriptive word for it.

The objective in Japanese gardens is to create a sense of atmosphere and tranquility with few carefully placed plants. (And rocks.) Japanese use traditional pruning techniques to coax trees into shapes with gnarled and twisted branches to give them a wind swept look.

The tree in this picture is a good example.

Cheers

Very tranquil look to it. Thanks for posting it. The only thing missing is a nice old "goban" overlooking it.

Thanks, glad you like it.

I am not sure I understand what you are trying to say, goban is a Japanese board game.

I didn't realize this was done with larger plant life, I've only seen small plants in containers. Thanks for sharing this beauty.

Lol..Im sorry. I enjoy playing that game very much and would love to play it in a setting as beautiful as that! The two go together very well for me.

Thanks again!

Oh yes, I think you are referring to Bonsais and indeed some of the trees do look like giant Bonsais. Japanese people like conifer trees when they are leaning and/or have an S-bend trunk. The leaves (needles) are clumped into round shapes at the end of branches. Very traditional.

Have another look at the picture below, all the trees and plants are shaped and structured. Of course they are not growing in the wild but are planted in either yards display areas or gardens. The are looked after with great care.

Thanks for commenting.

Cheers

Public gardens are always looked after very well with a lot of pride.
