The medieval towers of the ruined church of St Mary at Reculver, they were added in the late 12th century to a church founded in 669, when King Ecgberht of Kent granted land to Bassa the priest for the foundation of a monastery.

I remember now where I've seen that place name before...

It was the beach they used to do the final test drops of the Barnes Wallis “bouncing bomb” in May 1943.

absolutely right - if you search out some of the film footage from the tests you can see the church towers in the
background.

the tide goes out quite a way here, and I believe that they could wade out and inspect/recover the test bombs to
work out if the construction of them would survive..
