Wedding season has begun... yay?
Posted By: codiac2600, 08-09-2008, 09:53 PM

So every month is another wedding and a couple of those months have two or more weddings... I need a vacation!

The Church

The Dress

The mother and the daughter

The bride

The dress on the bride

The groom

The rings

The deal is sealed

Tears are shed

The deal is done and signed

Now we want to get to the part bus but the photog is doing formals !?#$

Well the party made it to the formals...

Don't drop her or else!

Or she won't be in this picture with her new hubby...

BTW, all the outdoor stuff is lit using my lighting gear and it made all the difference in the final product...

Oh just for info this wedding was 16 hours long and the formal shots had a 28 minute limit before the ceremony and a 37 minute limit before the reception. I got the lights up and over 100 formal lit shots with multiple groupings in and out in less than an hour. No time for fancy stuff at all!!!!!!!

you know this already but I will say it any way. Stunning work! Love the colors inside the church too. Was it well lit? Use flash to get the look or?? If you would kindly share

Of course I'll share I was actually training another photographer during this wedding and am digging out my notes right now.

The church was decently lit, but had one issue at hand... I had three light sources to battle and a fourth created by my flash and a fifth caused my the reflection of my flash off the glossy varnish of the wood.

I had sunlight through the windows, which gave me an internal setting of ISO 640 and f4.0 at 1/60. Those were my base settings I used for the fill flash but now I had a major white balance issue because the fill for even illumination allowed the florescent lighting as well as the tungsten lighting to come play. The flash was bounce at a 45 degree angle which made pretty light, but I ended up with a yellow/brown light from the bounce off the nice shiny wood. I played a little bit and boosted my flash a bit to 1/4 to overpower the tungsten and florescent lights, but the background ended up a little dark so I set the camera to EV comp as far as I could go without overexposing the skin or dress. Basically ended up with a full manual flash and camera, which was fine and a crazy white balance setting of 4900K, which left the dress white and the bride nice and tan.

I am just a big fan of your work Chris.
Your portraits and group shots are exquisite.
Composition, poses, lighting and setting - all brilliantly arranged.
Just love it all.
The church, the rings, the last group shot are my faves.
Thanks for sharing.
These are inspirational.

Beautiful shots Chris!

What was involved with your outdoor lighting kit that you mentioned?

The group shots I've setup a neat little rig for getting perfect illumination for a large group.

I setup 4 lightstands with strobes at 1/4 power and 30" shoot through white umbrellas. Two are set at the extremes and are pointed towards the people at the edges and about 2 feet towards the inside of the group are two more lights pointed right for the center.

This way I can shoot from anywhere and end up with an even illumination while balancing for daylight. Windy days are my only struggle, but I'm going to buy some camping spikes to hold down the lightstands on the really bad days cause sadnbags are too heavy to lug around IMO.
