Because of the prickly hard skin, you need a bit of expertise to open them to get at the strong-smelling flesh inside. When ripe, they drop to the ground, usually during the early morning. If you happen to be under the tree when one of this falls, it can hurt you seriously. However, I've not known of anyone being hit, probably hardly anyone will go out to the garden during such early hours.
