Lest we forget
Posted By: RobG, 04-25-2017, 01:26 AM

Today was a very sad and damp Anzac Day. It's the main day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand for military sacrifice, and originated in the hope that the loss of so many lives in Gallipoli in WW1 would never be forgotten. It has evolved into a commemoration for all those who served in the military in all conflicts from the Boer War to today.

not to get too political but the waste of life, both military and civilian, in war knows no nationality
we must not lose sight of that fact
Anzac Day is specifically about those Australians who fought for their country. In WW1, fewer civilians died than military personnel. Still a horrendous number. In WW2, the civilian casualties were double the military. In more recent conflicts, it's hard to say. As has already been stated, war is a terrible thing in general, not simply for those at the front line.

Australia and New Zealand troops ??
Yes, ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) day originated from the commemoration of Australian and New Zealand troops in a disastrous attempt to land at Gallipoli in Turkey. Australia has an ANZAC day, and so does New Zealand. ANZAC Day in Australia today is primarily about Australians who fought for their country in all conflicts, not simply the original ANZACs who have passed on. Of course the day is also about the cooperation of Australian and New Zealand troops. I'm not belittling anything to do with the relationship between Australia and New Zealand to state the fact that ANZAC day today is about a lot more than that original failed campaign.

No worries! The similar public holiday in the USA is probably Veteran's Day.

When I checked the Australian War Memorial's list of casualties, the number of conflicts in which Australians served is higher than I thought.

The military history of New Zealand is similarly complex for a small population:

which grew from the Armistice Day holiday remembering the Armistice ending the combat in World War I and honoring those who died in the War

the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month

to honoring all veterans as well as honoring all who have died in the wars involving the US

My mother emigrated from Australia to US after WW2...

She always remembered Anzac Day, everybody in her generation knew, or was related to someone who sacrificed their all.

Yes, this is named as "Remembrance Day" in many countries. In certain places in Australia, a minute's silence is held at the 11th hour on November the eleventh.

Yes, it's hard for those of us who weren't involved in that way to imagine.
