Smokies were at almost at their wildflower peak when we were there earlier this month.

Really nice. How have things recovered after the fire?

We didn't go to Gatlinburg (really dislike even driving through there) but things are supposed to be open. We only saw evidence of the fire at Chimney Tops and Cove Hardwood trail. Most of our time was spent in the Cade's Cove area and there was no evidence of fire there at all.

Thanks, I was concerned about the Cove Hardwood Trail since it was close to the fire area and always has a variety of wild flowers in the spring.

Very cool, Susan - the light, ephemeral look of this one is something special.

Some of the old-timers (guys who have been photographing flowers in the area for a long time) indicated that there were not as many flowers as normal due to the fire. The variety did seem to be affected but there were still plenty of flowers.

Very nice work--FWIW, last year's drought did seem to winnow out some flowers in some habitats (for instance, I've noticed there being a lot fewer foam flowers this spring) and despite the mild winter, blooming times seem about a week behind. It will be interesting how the "flower calendar" unfolds through the summer months.

The drought seemed really bad last year but the rivers and waterfalls were full and beautiful this spring. I think downed trees had a bigger impact on wildflowers this year. Some of our favorite places to find Lady Slippers for instance were hidden under dead trees.

Very nice pic. The soft colour gives it that real "art" look. I have observed places recovering after fire and drought. I think everything hangs on in the seed bank but what predominates depends on exactly when rain falls in the recovery stage. I notice it most with weeds. Even two weeks difference (say late August instead of early September) can make a complete difference in the weeds we get. I guess it would be the same with the wild flowers. Having said that, I suppose there would be long term changes if some species can get the upper hand.

Weeds are wildflowers growing in the wrong place.
Thanks for having a look and commenting.
