Student Build Race Cars
Posted By: uwmechengr, 08-12-2008, 09:15 PM

Kinda new here. Got my k100d a year ago and I couldn't be happier. I figured I'd introduce myself by posting pics of one of my favorite subjects over the last year. I was lucky enough to be part of a team at my university which designs and builds formula-style race cars for national and international competitions. These are a few from the "West" competition at Autoclub Speedway in LA at the end of June.

I was also lucky enough to be able to use my friend's K10 that weekend, because he was on crutches with a broken ankle. So some are with the k10, and some with my k100

Our car, the UW Formula Motorspors Team19 car

Washington State... they only look like they're braking down, it's really just oil in their turbo burning off

The whole set can be found here: Formula SAE West 2008 - a set on Flickr
Thanks for looking (and yes, I'm aware of the dust spots, but I'm a bit lazy right now)

*d'oh, should be "built" not "build". Engineer, what can I say.

They look good, with the exception of all the sensor dust.

I'm a little curious about those cars as well.
Are they motorbike motors?

@little laker:Yeah, one of the main rules is the engine has to be 4-stroke gas cylinder engine under 610cc's so that pretty much limits us to motorcycle engines.

@nupentaxian: Ours did 0-60 mph in a little under 4 seconds. And we're on the heavy side of the competition, generally.

Nice pics! Time to break out the GSX-R 600 engine and let the good times roll! Certainly looks like a heap of fun.

I like the first car most. As for the shots... you are a master of panning! And you've got dust on your sensor.

Go Dawgs! Looks like you had a great time, and I like the pics a lot...

Sadly, I too suffer from a dusty sensor. It really needs a wet cleaning, Rocket blower just won't get it.

as far as I recall, the really bad spots on the last two I posted were just on the CP filter, not the sensor. I had to move the 50-200 from the k10 to the k100 because I foolishly forgot to charge the batteries for the k10 the night before, and it died. Things are just moving so fast on track that I couldn't take time to take the brush to the filter/lens.

Great shots & excellent panning technique! Wish I could have done stuff like that when I was in college.

Great shots, #3 especially looks a bit like a chainsaw with wheels.
