I've seen just one in the wild during my lifetime, a huge specimen in the Coliban River near Malmsbury.
Nice! It's true, most Australians haven't seen one in the wild. I've been lucky enough to see quite a lot of them, and I've been able to show them to friends visiting from overseas.
The best campsite ever - Eungella near Mackay.
PS This guy is in one of many ponds in a sanctuary - an area of several hectares which is walled off from predators like foxes and cats. So he's not really "in the wild" but certainly more free than being in a zoo. I have been as close to a wild platypus, but not had the chance to get a photo! Lots of people went to the sanctuary yesterday who didn't see them, including one of the people I work with. I just thought I should point out that I can't claim that this animal was truly "in the wild". I'm still really happy with the photos.
