This one is perhaps a bit sharper, but I really wanted to show that fat tail!

Thank you both! It was great to be so close to one. It was late on a sunday and I don't think he expected anyone to be around!

Rob's photo proves they exist. TFS Rob otherwise, I would never get to see one. Nice capture.

Thanks! When the first skins were sent back to the UK at the end of the 18th century, people thought that bits from different animals had been sewn together. Not only does it have what looks like a duck's bill (but is actually soft), it lays eggs!

Most Australians have never caught a glimpse of one.

I've seen just one in the wild during my lifetime, a huge specimen in the Coliban River near Malmsbury.

Nice! It's true, most Australians haven't seen one in the wild. I've been lucky enough to see quite a lot of them, and I've been able to show them to friends visiting from overseas. The best campsite ever - Eungella near Mackay.

PS This guy is in one of many ponds in a sanctuary - an area of several hectares which is walled off from predators like foxes and cats. So he's not really "in the wild" but certainly more free than being in a zoo. I have been as close to a wild platypus, but not had the chance to get a photo! Lots of people went to the sanctuary yesterday who didn't see them, including one of the people I work with. I just thought I should point out that I can't claim that this animal was truly "in the wild". I'm still really happy with the photos.
