The Racetrack
Lens: Voigtlander 15mm Camera: Leica SL ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: Above 6s Aperture: F11

The Racetrack, in Death Valley, where the stones travel by themselves is an incredible location. The long off-road drive to get there is definitely worth it: seeing and photographing these stones with their trails is magic, every time. Leica SL (Typ 601) and Voigtlander 15mm. Thanks for viewing, best regards

Vieri

Beautiful B&W. Great subject matter. Read about this years ago but can't remember the explanation.

Agreed! Very nice image.

IIRC the stones move when the area floods with rainwater and then a thin layer of ice forms on that water. Wind pushes the ice which in turn pushes the rocks, leaving the trails.

Thank you very much everyone, I am glad you enjoyed it! As far as the explanation, Matt is correct (at least, this is the one explanation I also knew), but personally I still prefer to think that they move magically

Best regards,

Vieri

You're making me want to drive up there. I don't have offroad capability though.

I drove there in a Subaru Legacy wagon, with just under 6" of ground clearance. Easy drive. One does need to be careful when encountering the numerous washouts along the way, but all that I came across were easy to cross.

Take plenty of water though, as it is a desert.

You have been lucky, I guess I have been there many times, over a dozen I guess, and I have found the road in different states of disrepair - from not too bad, to very ruined - and I wouldn't risk it with a car like yours. As they say, it's all Ok until it isn't, and I much rather rent a better suited vehicle. As far as the ride itself, I agree with you that it's not a terribly demanding off-road - the track is easy enough, but it's long and can be pretty tiring if one isn't used to that kind of driving. If one isn't comfortable doing that, or just to take the driving out of the pleasure of photographing the stones, there are many Workshops bringing you there (including mine, but not before 2021). The Racetrack is worth every minute of the road though!

Best regards,

Vieri
