Fawns First Hour
Lens: DA*300 Camera: K-3 Photo Location: Aston, PA
Posted By: KiloHotelphoto, 06-13-2017, 01:07 PM

Last night at work we had another new addition to are deer herd. This little guy was just born and could barley stand up. Mom gave it a good clean up and then had a meal of the afterbirth that was kind of disgusting to watch.

This fawn was born in a area that has a large fox family I've been following and I'm not sure if it made it through the night, it was so small that even the fox kits could take it.

I do love how their eyes have a blue color to them when they are born.

Nice series. #3 my favorite. We raised goats, which are basically domesticated deer, for ten years. Over that time our does blessed us with over 150 kids. Besides being full of a variety of nutrients that the doe needs at this time, eating the after birth goes a long way in removing the scent a predator can hone in on.

What a great opportunity to not only see, but photograph this newborn! Many, many years ago I was lucky to come across twins that were just born!

I love #3. Talk about a proud mom! Also #4. Of course they are all great!

It was so hard not to go over and pet it, it was difficult not to get closer also but I didn't want to disturb mom to much.
