Hi,
I saw some fantastic clouds while out hiking today, this formation looks to me like the 'Star Ship Enterprise'

Yikes, the USS Enterprise is cloaking itself in clouds...

Very interesting cloud formation Tom - that's nice shot.

Cheers,

Thanks again

Laree, this was taken coming down from Grisedale pike which is about 6 miles from where i live.

Marc, somebody on another forum suggested it was a 'lenticular' cloud, ive not heard of them but it looks pretty close: 10 Very Rare Clouds (no.7)

It is a lenticular cloud, caused by compression of the wind over a mountain range. We see them all the time in the Australian Alps. Best place I've ever seen them was in New Zealand...

Best examples are in almost clear air, with a cap like cloud over the peak. Sometimes they form "stacks"

Nice and green over there from the look of things.

Thanks for that Dale. Clouds are pretty fascinating things and it was great to actually spot one of these ones.
Yes very green at the moment but its not to long until the landscape turns to reds, yellows, browns and any other autumn colour! Love that time of year.

Funny, when I read your thread title, I said to myself, "I bet it's a lenticular cloud." Cool image.
