It is a lenticular cloud, caused by compression of the wind over a mountain range. We see them all the time in the Australian Alps. Best place I've ever seen them was in New Zealand...
Best examples are in almost clear air, with a cap like cloud over the peak. Sometimes they form "stacks"

Laree, this was taken coming down from Grisedale pike which is about 6 miles from where i live.
Marc, somebody on another forum suggested it was a 'lenticular' cloud, ive not heard of them but it looks pretty close:
