A face of story teller
Posted By: roentarre, 08-18-2008, 01:39 AM

On the weekend, I had a chance to take street candid photographs with Voe.

The occasion was great given there were so many opportunities for candids.

This elderly man was talking with an extremely deep voice on the phone. The lighting makes him like a prophet.

The shot was taken with Fa * 80-200 f2.8 on k20d. I put a black gradient gradient on the right to decrease the distraction.

Perfect lighting and marvellous composition.
Once past that I notice the cell phone hidden in hand close to his ear, this conjures up an exquisite juxtaposition between the modern technology of the phone and the wisdom of the ancients aura of the gentleman. Like one of those fantasy novels involving alternate realities and the people and things that go between them.

I always wanted to write a critique with posh words like that .......................................... and mean it.

Wow, just incredible. I love the confusion that this image evokes - an older (perhaps wise) man, clearly using techonology (talking on a blackberry). Fantastic!
I think the darker right side helps to keep your attention on the face.
Sometimes less is more. Glad that it works out getting quite a few responses in the forum.

I actually had a lot of trouble with the overexposure on his beard. The shot was not converted to black and white at all, just an added black gradient on the right.

WOW!!!

"CLUNK!!!" (that was my jaw hitting the desk)

Seriously, I can't recall seeing a better image.....ever! I may have seen some (very, very few) as good as this, but surely nothing that surpasses it.

I'm jealous!
You are definitely exgerating there. I see many great face shots on jpgmag and flickr. Thanks for your support!

Great shot. Reminds me of Galdalf from Lord of the Rings.

He sounds too ocker to be Gandalf and missing a shaft.

A wonderful capture. mood and story telling photo ;-)
Definitely he is not homeless. He owned a phone and got a scooter nearby

I like the shot. This man could only be a story teller. Or a wizard.

Magical!

Side lighting creates mood. Interesting to see all kinds of interpretations. Thanks again

Very very nice.

Since the hat is cut maybe take a little more off the top (and left to balance)?
You are right about that. I picked up photography since last weekend and I realised that I had been chopping people's head off quite frequently. Something to watch out for. Thanks

Thanks, Stu. Sometimes I do get lucky. Not taking that many photographs these days. Trying to catch up

Thank you James

You are too kind. The bokeh on the right was kind of nice in fact. I decided to leave out the bokeh for the simplicity.

Sometimes candid is a lot easier than a classic protrait. No need to set up lighting, backdrop but just a click with camera at the right time!

Gary, that is a lot of writing and I think I am reading a poetry in English Literature class here. Thanks for writing so much about the shot leaving my a little shy here. Sure there needs a few improvements for which I received quite a few negative comments in the photo critique forum. Points taken and learnt.
