Keeps the wood swollen to make sure gaps don't appear in a wood hull between planks. At least in salt water that is one method of preservation of older hulls when awaiting repairs. There are several old oyster boats near me that were sunk until new owners turned them into tourist schooners. Keeps caulk and tarring in place too.

Hit a rock, left a tube that is suppose to get rid of water open for pressure from the other side; the list of stuff that can sink a yacht is rather long... I really dig this photo. Although for the owner it is a tragic sight, it does reveal a sense of humor.

Edit, looks like it was anchoring (the sign in the mast.)

Must try and find the owner and tell him... I'm sure that'll make his day, especially when tells me it's made of glass fibre.
