Test shots with FA* 300 4.5
Lens: FA* 300 4.5 Camera: K-50 Photo Location: Liberty, Maine Porch ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/320s Aperture: F7.1

It is here! Three and a half days after winning the auction, my FA*300 arrived from Tokyo. Hooray for Japan Post! I just took a few shots to see what I have.

Test images with my recently arrived FA*300 4.5that I was sad at spending so much on. Maybe not so sad anymore. I may be in love with everything but the 2 pound weight.

The Mockingbird was hopping about but when I held on her properly, she stayed in focus. Shots at 16M are very tightly focused.

Bird is at f 4.5 1/320s, i was about 6.5 Meters from her. The pole is something I have shot with my longer lenses to test sharpness. The shrunken .jpg doesn't really show how sharp it is.

I was figuring that it could end up re-sold if I wasn't in love... Now, if I was facing bankruptcy I would still try to keep it. Now I see why people spend the large dollars for high end, (* lenses and Ltd,) just based on image quality. It is better than me and maybe even better than my K-50.

Small?? Really? Compared to the kit lenses it is a tank, but in effect it is exponentially better in pretty much every measurable way than a budget lens. Since it broke my budget, it better be!

It's small. You obviously don't own standard prosumer's 70-200 f2.8 or 150-500 lenses!

In a zoo I'll pop it on my K-1, when looking for wildlife I'll pair it with a 1.4 TC on my K-S2 to get the equivalent of 600mm at f6.7.

That may seem a poor approximation of the DA 560mm f5.6, but check out the price of that mutha!

My Tamron 18-200 is pretty handy and about half the weight. Not quite as sharp but pretty darn good for 13% of the price of my FA*. Now my Vivitar Series 1 28-105mm is a potential weapon if swung. Beefy in a good way. The price of the FA has put a damper on my LBA since now I need to figure out what to keep and what to sell.

Where did you pick up the TC 1.4, and what did it run you? (If you don't mind answering.)

Yeah, I have the 55-300, but I just don't use it if I'm out to try to get a serious shot like this, taken with the FA*300, 1.4TC and K-S2:

The 300 I got cheap by eBay, the TC unfortunately I paid RRP from the Pentax importer here in Australia. I don't remember the exact damage - but suffice to say, afterwards I threw away the cheap Tamron 1.5TC I had been using before then. I was better off cropping than putting it in front of good glass.
