a few pans from ironman 2017
Lens: da*50-135 Camera: k3 Photo Location: whistler, bc ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/50s Aperture: F7.1

while my girlfriend competed in ironman i was out with the camera for a while. took these during the bike portion of the event (the most interesting from a photo taking standpoint i think). unfortunately i didn't get a shot of my girlfriend as a car obscured her on her way by. very disappointing. so here are a few people i don't know.

camera settings were very simple. SR off, shutter priority at 1/50, iso 100

Thanks Kevin. With panning it's a delicate balance with shutter speed to get both enough blur but also enough keepers.

I tend to go more for blur and less for keep rate. I'm not a pro and don't have an expected production of photos so I go for max blur. My keep rate for these was probably around 5%

Love the background in the third shot- really shows the speed of the passing bike!

These are amazing - terrific job. As good an example of excellent panning as I've ever seen!

My daughter has done (and completed) three Iron Man competitions, as well as done a variety of triathlons and marathons, including two Boston Marathons. On a number of times I tried to capture her riding, but I never was able to capture the essence like you have. You 'da man.

thank you for all the kind words.

i managed to find most of the people in the pics by looking up their bib #s and using social media, so i made sure to pass the photos on to them (as well as full res .tif for printing).

i feel that athletes are regularly subject to outrageous photography fees and often receive lackluster pictures (some guy with a camera, taking the exact same frozen frame shot of every single person that passes, then wirelessly transmitting them to a laptop where they are instantly tagged and uploaded for sale, poop). this really shouldn't be the case as they are the ones who are putting on the show, training their butts off and putting it all out there on race day. i feel that they deserve a memorable photo.

i do my best to share my work with the people who are front and center.
