Black Swallowtail - a tale of eleven days
Camera: K-3/K-50 Photo Location: Pepperberry Farm
Posted By: pepperberry farm, 08-06-2017, 01:44 PM

on July 26th, we noticed a caterpillar that had stopped moving and was about to transform into a chrysalis...

so we watched the chrysalis for the next eleven days...

and today, just after it finished raining, I went out to check.... and the butterfly had arrived:

I created an album in flickr for the series:

hope you enjoy!

Good work! I'm trying to complete a sequence of the Gulf Fritillary, a lovely butterfly whose caterpillars feed on the Passion Flower, both the leaves and the fruit. I've gotten pictures of the adults mating, many shots of the adults feeding, the caterpillars from tiny creatures 1/4 inch long to 2 1/2 inches, and an inadequate shot of the adult emerging from the chrysalis. No shots of egg laying - it takes but a second. I also need a macro shot of the egg, which is perhaps 1 mm in diameter, and green so it blends in with the foliage.

far more ambitious than my project - I just happened to notice the beginning and hoped I could be there at the end...
