Tree and Wispy clouds
Posted By: JMR, 08-19-2008, 08:15 PM

A shot of a trees and wispy and billowy clouds slowly making their way across a deep blue sky. But with this infrared contrasty image, you would never know if I didn't tell you. Henrique knows where this was taken, because, if I am not mistaken, he has posted some photos from this place. Taken in the red hills of Caledon (north of Toronto) known as the badlands.

Spooky. The mood is definitely there, dark and brooding. I love it. The first shot is my favorite

I realy like the shots and the effects of IR but I know nothing about it.

When and why did IR photography become popular and can the same or similar effect be produced using the channel mixer in photoshop? I guess I could google the term but I have seen alot off IR pics here and on other forums and am interested to find out.

Thanks for the feedback.

I am no expert in infrared, I simply used Photshop elements to produce the effect. It gives an option to convert to infrared. From there you alter the effect using the channel mixer. In fact I achieved the same result, as you said, in the channel mixer. But the preprogrammed IR is the best start. In the predigital days, you had to use a special film and usually a dark red filter and you had to learn how to specially focus.
There is a memebr here who can probably can adress your questions better than I. He in fact converted his entire camera to produce IR images only. Hopefully, he is reading this; I believe he is from Japan.

Beyond that, I would say, try to look for images that are simple and stark, as I am sure you will find it is just a gimmick unless you feel an image is reasonably suitable. Give it try.

Ok thanks for the info JMR

Ive seen IR filters before that seem to be quite exspensive and didnt really understand why you would want to use them. I just watched James Bond the other day and he had a pair of glasses that enabled him to see through things, oh the fun you could have with a filter like that on the camera
