sorry... no action here...move along now
Posted By: Marc Langille, 08-20-2008, 06:06 PM

The first image is not cropped, and the second one is slightly cropped for better composition.

Looks like this Green Heron is taking my advice to move along...

Then the action started:

Crop of shot:

OK, so there was a little action...

Cheers,
Marc

As always, very good work, Mark. But surely you are not suggesting the Green Heron moved out of the way so you can photograph the White Heron ;>) It is a white Heron?

Sigma 500/4.5

Thanks guys! It was with the Sigma 500mm f/4.5 APO EX DG lens - it's really, really sharp. I'll post some Pentax specific shots later on...

Cheers,
Marc

Thank you sir! Just so you know, yellow bill + black legs + larger bird = Great White Egret...

AFAIK, only a White Morph Blue Heron would look similar - and the legs are not black. The Great Blue Heron is about 46" in length, the GWE is 39" in length.

Cheers,
Marc

Excellent Marc! Is that 500mm Sigma THAT much sharper than the Bigma?
Apparently it is! I love the Green Heron. I don't get the opportunity to see them around me. I have to travel a few hours North to get a glimpse. Thanks for sharing these. I anxiously await more.

Thanks LaRee! It is SCARY sharp... Seriously, in the right conditions, it's an excellent lens, no question. It's worth the price of $4000-$4200. Glad I didn't pay for it!!!

Green Heron larger image - I took this image on a Kirk Fat Bean Bag on the window ledge of my SUV. Perhaps it was 20-30 feet from me. It holds up very, very well even at 100%. Again, no cropping... F/7.1, 1/500 sec, ISO 400...

I DID NOT submit this image for the competition. More to follow LaRee!

Cheers,
Marc

Forgot to mention: I'll dig up the humorous photo of the Green Heron in the next day or two - it's a hoot!!! OMG it is really funny...

Cheers,
Marc

Wow, those are some stunning shots! The amount of detail in the large version is amazing. I really like the lighting on the first bird and the frozen action on the second.
