Butterfly Mustache

I should probably save this for Movember, but ehh...

I've reared a few dozen Monarchs this year from eggs or wee caterpillars so finally, by sheer numbers, I've been able to watch a few eclose (and also moult, pupate, etc.). It happens so fast, the chrysalis sits for a couple of weeks, then BAM! Inside of 5-10 minutes you have a fresh butterfly, so it's easy to miss. I was trying to pay close attention to the proboscis development on this one (that's the 'straw' they use for sucking nectar). It comes out in 2 c-channels that get zipped together. I ended up a bit distracted by the lovely mustache. Ah well, more on the way.

More details in the Flickr link below, I went with iso400 to keep flash power at 1/4. I was hand holding (the angle was super awkward) and the butterfly was still hanging from its chrysalis and spinning a bit, so a shorter flash duration was a must. I may try again with a wider aperture, a bit more mustache separation would be nice. I also tried with a saturated yellow backdrop, but I preferred the whiter version, in seemed to sync nicely with the 'stache.

Thanks for looking
