Andromeda Galaxy above Thunderstorms
Posted By: DeadJohn, 09-07-2017, 10:42 PM

I took the attached photo from central Nebraska (NE of North Platte) August 19, 2017 during my eclipse road trip. There were strong thunderstorms, lightning, and 5 tornadoes 50 miles away while the sky above remained crystal clear.

The horizontal smudge just right of center is the Andromeda Galaxy. To give you an idea of how large it actually is, it fills a portion of the sky 6 times wider than the moon, even though it lies a distant 2.5 million light years away.

That's a great image, I really must have a go at this sort of stuff and will be your fault and nobody else's, when it don't work out as well as this.

Fantastic. Well-captured and a rare opportunity.

The heavenly objects are nice, but I find the terrestrial objects more fascinating.

I just noticed you can also see the double cluster in Cassiopeia to the left of m31 in this shot. It really is something.
