Andromeda Galaxy above Thunderstorms
Posted By: DeadJohn, 09-07-2017, 10:42 PM

I took the attached photo from central Nebraska (NE of North Platte) August 19, 2017 during my eclipse road trip. There were strong thunderstorms, lightning, and 5 tornadoes 50 miles away while the sky above remained crystal clear.

The horizontal smudge just right of center is the Andromeda Galaxy. To give you an idea of how large it actually is, it fills a portion of the sky 6 times wider than the moon, even though it lies a distant 2.5 million light years away.

That's a wall hanger for sure! You can get the most beautiful night skies and dramatic weather out there... Truly love the internal lighting of the t-storm cell...

Awsome image! I was in Waco Nebraska for the eclipse on that very same night, 180 miles east of North Platte. We were touched by some of that wind and rain for a couple of hours. 50 miles north of us it poured all night!

That is a brilliant shot, you may of got a few sprites from that distance. Is it a single shot or stitch?

Single shot. K-1 at 28mm, slightly cropped to remove clutter in the foreground.

I didn't previously mention I spent over an hour driving trying to get closer to the storm. It was moving so quickly that I couldn't catch up at sane driving speeds. I'm no tornado chaser; I was only hoping to get within 20 miles so I'd have plenty of safety even if the track changed. The photo was taken from around 50 miles away.
