Not just the UK, the show was imported into the US as well. I saw the whole series back in the 80's.

One thing I thought I remembered but can't track down in all the lists of quotes from the show: "I didn't get where I am today by having a silly catchphrase", or words to that effect.

Mark wikipedia has a complete list of quotes from the series, lot of silly phrases.
