Pentax builds them tough....
Posted By: Heinrich Lohmann, 08-22-2008, 07:53 PM

....On the second morning of my trip I was on my way back to the car, Bigma and K10D over my left shoulder, K100D and 16-45 around my neck and the tripod in my right hand. I was coming of a grassy area unto the gravel path and the next thing I knew I was on my way down, face first and I knew that this was not going to be good. One of my feet had gotten hooked behind a hidden root and that was that.

After I cleaned and disinfected severe abrasions on my left forearm and my forehead, picked the gravel out from under my nails of my right hand, got all the bleeding stopped, sat down and had a bottle of water I looked at the camera and lenses. To tell the truth, they looked a mess. Now, there area few things that I always have in the car, a substantial first aid kit and cleaning material.

So I set to work and started cleaning, both lenses Bigma and the 16-45 seemed to take the brute of the fall on the lens hoods, they were pretty scratched up. The K10D also has a few scratches on the rear corner by the serial #.

After everything was reasonable clean I took a few test shots and low and behold everything seemed to be working fine. Later that night in the hotel I did a few focus checks and it it seemed to be OK. So the next morning I drove down to Whitewater Lake (in Manitoba) and here are some of the results:

Ah, what a fine morning,

Let's have a drink

Oh, but that was good

Now for a bit of body maintenance

That's when the bird noticed me

One last parting shot

All with K10D and Bigma, handheld.

So, as you can see everything works fine. Looking in the mirror, the two bumps on my forehead aren't really all that bad, most of the wrinkles are gone. LOL

Please let me know how color and contrast looks, this laptop is not calibrated and I have never liked it anyway.

comments are always welcome

Wow, I am glad you and your equipment came through relatively OK!!! I do not recommend bleeding as a standard MO... ouch...

Nice shorebird images Heinrich! They are quite interesting to watch, no question...

Regards,
Marc

Hi Dave and thank you. Do me a favour and let me know how my posts look for color and contrast. On this uncaliberated laptop and different lighting in every hotel room it's hard to tell how things look. Thanks and do take care,

Glad your ok and real glad the Bigma was unharmed. ...
The shots look great can't wait to see some more from the trip.
Your daddy knew, after things sort of settled down first thing I did was look around to see whether anyone had seen this performance. LOL

Take care,

Excellent series.

Glad you are OK. Now let's not do any more of that impact testing of the cameras and lenses. LOL
Thank you Frank and yes, one test was enough two would be testing fate. LOL

Take care,

Pics look great! Good to hear your ok, and cool that your quite prepared too for such things!

Few years back, I was at Laguna Seca Raceway (near Monteray, CA) for the American Lemans Finale (I take my teens every year, we're all huge sportscar racing nuts). Working towards the Start/Finish line before the end of the 4 hour race, it was getting dark. We had to squeeze between some equipment and a fence, and we're forced on a very steep asphalt inbankment. Making our way along at this very awkward angle for a bit, I slipped on some loose gravel. My feet went out from under me, and I landed on my old Super Program with the MD attached, and my K A 70-210. I took the body/md combo in my ribs (bruised the hell out them, was tough breathing for weeks) and the lens hood was forced into the imbankment..denting it a tad.

I got better, and the hood still has that ding...but works great to this day.

Tough Gear Indeed!

Thank you JET, I have had camera mishaps during the years but before this one always without bodily harm LOL. The only camera tougher than a Pentax was my old (in the fifties) Leica IIf. It took some incredible abuse and never missed a beat (but started to look beat up)

Take care,

Take care.

Heinrich, glad to hear you didn't get hurt seriously. (the fact the camera ane lenses survived pretty much intact except for a few scratches is great, but secondary)

Nice shots, too.

Thank you Dan and of course you are right. On the other hand though, skin heals more or less by itself where cameras cost money to fix. LOL

Glad you are ok... and the gear too. My waterfall mishap was similar. After a bit of scotch and a few days rest all was as good as new.
