Roadrunner and Sparrow images
Posted By: Marc Langille, 08-24-2008, 02:00 PM

Only a slight crop on the top of this image - yes she was that close - I had nowhere to go...

Taken at F/7.1, 1/1000 sec., ISO 1250, EV -0.7, M mode using the K20D + FA* 300/2.8 using the "Kirk Fat Bean Bag special setup" (my window ledge inside the SUV):

I've submitted the above image plus the shot of this lady in a full run to the PPG...

One more with the K20D + FA* 300/2.8 - taken at F/4.5, 1/640 sec., ISO 800, EV -0.7, M Mode with Tamron 1.4x Pz-AF MC4 Teleconverter:

The above image is a moderate crop - the actual size is 2240x 1644 pixels after cropping. It's now in the Pentax Photo Gallery...

The sparrow image (no cropping) below was taken at F/8, 1/400 sec., ISO 800, EV -0.7. That shutter speed is NOT recommended for a 500mm lens with no stabilization in it or the body... I am glad it came out that crisp...

Crop of the Sparrow image - this is barely at 50% of the actual image size:

Cheers,
Marc

WOW! Absolutely gorgeous shots. I'm green with envy.
Thanks Ty! They were in one place long enough to get a couple of shots...

Super Mark, you sure do get 'em. Looks like you could have kissed the roadrunnner if you wanted.

Gary
No kidding and thanks Gary!

Another great series Marc. really like the last two [50% crop one and the other with the rd background] Very sharp... Looks like great lenses and K20 is holding its own... JIMBO
Truly this is where the K20D is a boon - I could shoot higher ISO's without worrying too much about image detail loss. Thanks for looking and commenting Jimbo!

Woah that roadrunner image is absolutely amazing. The detail is incredible. What a great portrait to have in your portfolio Marc. It must have been something to have this bird get so close to you. To fill the frame at 300mm with this guy you had to be very close!
Thanks LaRee ! This lady was quite a character, no question. I consider myself very fortunate to have photographed her so close. I suspect she was 7-10 feet away, so I was getting close to MFD...

Cheers,
Marc

the big sizes do the shots great justice. How did you get such a clean red background in nr. 2 ?

I agree with everyone, especially with slowpez, as I was about to say that the image of the roadrunner is fantastic before I saw his comment, so now i have to say that is it marvelous and wonderful.

Those are beautiful shots Marc! I look forward to seeing your latest shots. You must have a lot to go through after your trip I think he's looking for one of those giant centipedes
Thank you Tom - I enjoyed taking those shots so much!

Seeing unfettered behavior in these animals was both breathtaking and humbling - it was a real treat and consider myself very fortunate to have participated in this competition.

To answer your question: I did take a lot of photos! Here's the shutter count breakdown - I finally went back and checked:

40D: 10,194
K20D: 4083
K10D: 2049

Total was approx. 142GB of RAW images.

Great images Marc. #2 really pops out from that reddish background.

Tom G
Thanks Tom G. and glad you enjoyed these! It was a studio setup outside and the sparrow was quite obliging... <just kidding>.

Seriously, by cropping a bit, it turns out much better. The darker area near the top is the window outline within the red painted dining lodge approx. 30-40 feet behind the sparrow.

Thank you Sune - that's one reason why I do the larger images - to show folks what the lenses are capable of rendering. It's pretty amazing in terms of clarity.

Answer to your question just above...

Marc

Again a set of stunners Marc

I am continued to be thrilled every time I open one of your threads in the Photo Post section.

Your perfection in capturing animals..especailly birds with these crisp detailed images sets a bench mark as to what is achievable with Pentax and wildlife photography

Keep em coming mate

Neil
Thank you very much for those kind words! Just the last subject is with the Canon system.

I will keep them coming... just not sure when I'll be able to dig through some more bird images! I have other classes I could post though.

Regards,
Marc

Indeed another outstanding series. The PPG would do well with any / all of these. The sparrow with the open mouth man you could check the tonsils on that one. Love the road runner as well. Well done Marc.
