IMO, it's ok to break the rules once you know them and understand why they are.

I get called on rules and composition all of the time.

Especially since the rule of thirds seems to be the only oe anyone knows, learn the other 10 is you want to follow the rules.

But trying to use 'em all at the time of image capture... I've started to just "wing it" as I've got older.

Ya, apply the rules after you take the photograph. There's bound to be one that fits.

Your photo follows the rule of thirds, she's just pointed the wrong way. If she was pointed the right way she would have seen you. Practical choice.
