It was so dark in there (shot @ 2500 ISO) I don't know how he could see to sew.

That machine looks correctly oriented to me. From the operator's position - motor, gearing, spools etc on his left; business end with needle on his right. BTW: my son who does a little sewing took my mother's little portable SInger which probably dates from the 1940's when she was first setting up our home. He tells me it is a desirable model among sewing-machine cognoscenti and in good working order will draw almost as much $ as a modern machine with similar features (= very basic, but very solid).
