Snowdonia in mono - Sigma 10-20
Posted By: simonkit, 08-26-2008, 03:44 AM

After a couple of comments on an image I posted earlier I've had a go at a mono conversion...used the grayscale conversion in CS3 raw tweaked a little & then did a little dodging & burning....to be honest though I've very little experience of mono conversion so any tips/pointers are appreciated

thanks

simon

Was it your intention to leave the green in Simon?

Don't think there's any green in there - I converted it using "grayscale" in ACR ?

The tones are probably not quite right which maybe still gives the indication of some colour...new to mono so this is a big learning curve for me

thanks

Maybe you used greenscale by mistake. I can definitely see a lot of green in the hills (esp. the far away ones that are in more light). I think my monitor is ok.
I like it whatever bloody colour it is.

Thanks guys,

Had another go at the B&W processing, tried to breakdown the large triangle of shingle in the R/H corner - eased off a little with the dodging compared to the 1st shot 2. Also the sky is now much more like the original colour version.

Hi Simon, I too have little experience of mono conversion but when I do do it I usually use the 'channel mixer' in layer adjustments, it gives you alot of control over the image via the RGB sliders once you have ticked the monochrome box. I dont have CS3 so cant convert the RAW image that way so I cant tell iif its any better.

Its a really nice image, is there any chance of seeing the colour version?

I have no idea what I'm doing but I love the second one,I like how the lightness of the track emphasizes the fork. Its the sort of picture you can stare at for ages.Lovely shot.

Thanks again everyone...

as requested here's the colour version, I wasn't happy with this one really as the lighting isn't great - fortunately someone suggested I try it in mono & it's rescued a shot I would otherwise perhaps have discard..or at least left to gather dust on my hard-drive !!

Well, I like them both.

I never did see the "green" that DB was talking about. I looked at the mono one 2 or 3 times, and didn't see it. Who knows, maybe MY monitor is off.

They say not ever photo looks great switched to B&W.. This one does and I think what makes the pictures is the small latter on the left.... Color is looks good too... but the B&W is where the shot should have gone... Love the reworked shot.. JIMBO
