Missouri State Capitol Dome
Posted By: awjweb, 02-21-2007, 11:20 AM

Shot these Monday on a tour of the Missouri State Capitol building. I'm very happy with the high ISO performance of the ist*DS. There is only slight grain in the full size shots.

Pentax ist*DS w/ Pentax DA 18-55mm at 18mm / F4.0 1/45 sec. ISO-1600

What a beautiful building! At first the first picture was my favorite, but the more I looked, the more I liked the second one, it's sort of like a picture within a picture. These came out very nice!

Thanks Xfraser. They said that this is among the top three most ornate Capitol buildings in the country. When it was built (in 1917) it was completed way under budget. The state government was "required" to spend all the appropriated funds so they spent up the rest of the money on paintings, statues, and other expensive architectural features

i like the series, the slight changes of angle really make high-impact shifts in motives. i think the white balance worked the best (by far actually) on the second one. i like the first composition the most.

The first shot was beautiful. I would have loved to shoot that with a fisheye!

Here's a few more from that day. The second shot is the house floor. I wish I could have bracketed this shot so that I could pull the stained glass window from the underexposed frame. I bracketed most of the shots I took that day but I did this one with the camera sitting on a rail using the 2 sec timer (1/15 sec., ISO200). I could not figure how to get the camera to bracket in timer mode.

I have others in this gallery: http://www.pbase.com/nnmo/capitol

Wish I knew you were going to be in the neighborhood.

Nate, Thanks for the link! Our tour was a private affair sponsered by Senator Loudon for a small group of grade school students. We were priviledged to visit non-public areas such as the Senate Lounge and the very top of the capitol dome on the outside of the building just underneith the statue. The view was wonderful up there but the wind felt like it was blowing 100mph. I have some pictures taken from the top as well as from the rickety spiral staircase leading to it.

I have never been to the top of the dome (and don't want to get that far off the ground) however my oldest daughter has. She took some photos but the light was rather harsh that day.

I'm glad you had a good visit albeit a windy one.

Ornate, to say the least.

Missouri's capitol may be fit for a kingdom, but Texas' is fit for an empire. (e.g. bigger, pinker (BIGGER THAN U.S. Capitol!)) :ugh:

Great, now I need pictures of the pink granite beauty for comparison.

Matthew, I would love to see what you can do. I know that Texas does everything in grand style so it's sure to be impressive! This was really a challenging day for me of dimmly lit indoor shots and brightly lit outdoor shots, all on a huge scale that seemed to exceed anything that I could properly capture using my skills with a camera. I'm more of an informal protrait photographer (whatever that is...) so it was really a change for me.

Very beautiful series of this wonderful capitol building!

The light and the colour are just so rich there. The geometrical patterns in the first few shots are fantastical!
