It's very hard to convey grittiness unless you shoot in black and white. Using Tri-X helps.

Picture is great, b&w and grain are pefrect for this kind of job. Did you develop it as ISO 400, or higher? Also, how did you mount Pentax M 50/1.4 on a Spotmatic? ;-)

Wow - what an incredible image! The composition, timing and the wonderful look of Tri-X - an intoxicated mixture. This shot took me back to the B&W boxing movies and newspaper pics of the '50s and '60s.

Thank you. As a matter of fact, it was.... it and the accompanying news article about the fight. I was working for McClatchy News Services at the time as a "Jimmy Olsen" of sorts. Full-time copy boy, teletype operator / wannabe news photog / reporter. I covered this California State Bantamweight Championship fight for them in 1975. By the way, the "David" in the photo won by decision. Fifteen rounds of pure mayhem! Props are due.... Rojeleo Lara (L) and Rudy Villagonza.

Ops... my bad about the camera/lens combo. This was taken back in 1975 and my memory isn't as good as it used to be. It should have read "Super Tak f:1.4". IIRC, I was shooting at a perceived ASA of 1200, shooting Tri-X and heating the developer. The lighting in the arena was horrible and I had to take some extraordinary measures to cope with it. My actual exposure info is long-since forgotten.

Very good shot of two boxers.

Interesting to note that you used Tri-X Black & White film and pushed it to 1200 asa. The 'grain' of the picture works very well in this photo and as said...adds to the grit of the boxing match.

I worked for a small publishing company in the late '60's, early '70's and we used to do the same thing for poorly lit, inside shots.

Your picture reminds me of a 1949, noir boxing classic film..."The Set-Up" starring Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter.
