Sailboats waiting for the starting gun, preparing for a race off Tiburon, near Angel Island, in San Francisco Bay. This particular spot was a great place to watch them jockeying for position.

Nice shot with a more than usual interesting content, especially if you know boats, weather does not look too promising though.

That colour of sky reminds me of a fine Scottish Summers day.

Thanks so much PenPusher! You're right, the wind wasn't particular strong or consistent.

Terrific photo, Jerry! Brings back some memories. The shot contains some J-Boats and other serious racing hardware, but among them is a Catalina 32 (or perhaps a 35) - a cruising-focused, larger version of my Catalina 30 MkIII, Cut Time. We sold her three years ago and I've missed her everyday since.

It's good that you can understand our Summer weather.

Thanks Jer. I know what you mean. Back in the day we had a little Lido 14 that we loved to sail, but an overseas (see below) job transfer forced us to sell it, and I've missed it ever since.

Our two years in Scotland taught us all we needed to know about Scottish summers. We knew we were in for trouble when June rolled around for our first look at summer, and guys were switching to t-shirts in 55 degree weather. After all, it was summer, right? Theoretically anyway....

Hi
I agree this is a fantastic Photograph.
What would otherwise only be a nice shot is now an outstanding one and this is only due to the dramatic and threatening sky and the light it produces.

A reminder to photographers to venture out when the weather is bad. Sometimes, the worse the weather the better the pictures.

The crew of one of the boats in this picture is having a nightmare spinnaker experience - the dreaded "hourglass", most likely because it got hoisted sideways in trying conditions. I know from my ocean sailing days in most cases there is only one way out, taking the spinnaker down and cotton it up anew or hoist another one (if you have one). Either way, in a race situation it sets you back.

Again, I like the photograph.

Cheers
