Himeji Castle
Posted By: Schraubstock, 01-15-2018, 12:08 AM

These picture were taken at Himeji's opening to the public after a 5 year renovation period.

The gleaming white of the Castle is the reason why Japanese people call it the White Heron.

As far as Japan is concerned Castles were constructed mainly of timber and as such presented a huge fire risk either through tribal wars (of which there were many in Japan) but more so through lightening strikes. Lightning Rods weren't yet invented. To reduce the risk of fire the outer walls of this castle, and some others, were covered with a white fireproof plaster which gave the castle the "White Heron" look.

Matsumoto Castle is another original castle but heavily restored and replaced parts. It is known as the "Crow Castle" because of its black fire proof exterior. (Don't know what it is made of)

Now is the time to visit the Himeji Castle to see it in the gleaming white because in a few years the white plaster will have lost its shine.

I like the 3rd picture. Your description gives context to this picture.

Lovely to see the grounds so green - I've only seen it in winter!

As a travel photographer I don't merely take pictures but also write down as much info as possible. That is part of the excitement for me.

Yes, I just have to force myself to get up as early as possible to avoid the crowds in popular periods like Spring and Autumn!

Himeji

And a great place to visit Himeji Castle is, to. A few years ago, my wife and I were lucky enough to do a tour with an English speaking guide. The history is fascinating as are the architectural details such as the fact that there are no nails or metal used in the building, it's all tongue and groove/joints.
By coincidence, I have a photo almost the same as your second one, taken from the same place

Peter.
