Ox Pull Illustration

County fairs are always fun. This young lady took first place in her class with a pull of 300 feet.

I like the shot Ken but the saturation may be a little high, unless this is what you were trying for. JIMBO

Hi Jimbo,
yeah the over saturated stylized look is what I was going for. Trying to make it look more like an illustration than a photo.

I like the look and wow that is a poster short for 'power' nicely done.

No offence Ken, the effect looks a lot better on the farmhouse shot you have in another thread.

As for the shot itself, perhaps you could have pulled-back (no pun intended) further to actually show the oxen in full.

Yeah this one doesn't work as well as the farmhouse. Still experimenting. Hay, no offense taken, as a matter of fact when I throw up these illustrations it's done with the hope you will chime in with things like "go back out and try again, you blew it on this one".

I'm going to have to disagree on the 'pulling back'. Just seeing those enormous shoulders (I'm not talking about the woman) is all that is necessary to convey the power in those beasts. It is a shame that we can't see much of the other ox.

Well Gary, since you brought up the issue of enormous shoulders, here is another illustration I took today at the Springfield fair. They host the Maine antique tractor pull every year with about 30 tractors taking part. The oldest was made in 1937. This Oliver is circa 1950 and the BMW is about the same age.

Love the tractor! For the first pic, I love the 'texture' on the woman, but its not working for me on the oxen.

Ken, it takes all kinds! Dekka, just above me mentioned that she likes the texture on the woman but not the ox. I'm just the opposite, I think the texture on the woman looks too...er...photography if you know what I mean, but I think you nailed the illustrative look on the ox!

lol it looks like painting to me (well at least what I have tried to do in the past with acrylics, with limited success)

Hey if we all liked the same things the world would be one boring place

This is great! Love the opposite views. It gives me something to think about as I try to develop the look more. Between the Blue Hill, Windsor, and Springfield fairs I've got about 400 shots to wade my way through. I might even be able to come up with a keeper or two.

Thanks,
