US Navy Camera Repairman.
Lens: Pentax 50mm f:1.4 Camera: Pentax Spotmatic Photo Location: Aboard ship

I came across these images shot about 50 years ago when I was in the US Navy. We were in the South China Sea during the Vietnam War. These have a certain '60's look about them, don't they? They were shot using Tri-X film.

Good candid portraits for their time.

I was just following whatever the Spotmatic indicated. This was back in the day when a through-the-lens light meter was cutting edge technology! I'm not certain, but I think Pentax was the first to do this. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Believe there is some debate whether it was the Pentax Spotmatic or Alpa 9D (both of which I own/used), or the Topcon (D?). It was 1964 as I recall.

Photographer’s Mate could be an interesting rating. I doubt they do much repair work themselves these days. But performing repair work on a boat, even a carrier, had to get interesting from time to time.

Great shots...is that camera part he is repairing, in the first picture, from a Rollei TLR ?

I have checked out those photos a couple of times, they're really good. The kind you would see in magazines like LOOK, Life back then . The close up and angle you took in the first picture...excellent... and I like the imaginative perspective of the second. I could see them in a feature series about life aboard a naval ship.

Were they used in any publication ?

They were only used in the shipboard publication, as far as I know. I did a series of photos from several departments aboard the ship, including the infirmary and others for "The Tico," the ship's newspaper. These are the only negatives I could find from way back then.
