Love our Rosellas! Fine shot Rob.

I check the Australian National Dictionary. It says that Rosella was a contraction from Rose Hill parrot or parekeet. I had thought that etymology was an urban myth, but they cite sources going back to 1828. They say that the Crimson Rosella was also called Nonpareil Parrot or crimson lowry/lowrie/lory. The term lowry can be traced to the 1860s, but the origin isn't explained. Contraction of lorikeet would be very Australian!

PS I checked the Macquarie Dictionary and "lory" has a more prosaic origin. It's from a Malay word for various parrots. Lorikeet is formed from Lory + parakeet.

Actually I think Bernard O'Reilly might have referred to the name Lowry in his tale about his youth in the Blue Mountains.
Thanks missed this author will be on my interest for cheers.

Thanks! The contraction makes sense. I was pretty sure that the "Rose hiller" becoming "Rosella" was genuine.

Bernard O'Reilly was part of the O'Reilly family who established O'Reilly's guesthouse in Lamington National Park on the NSW border. He helped rescue two survivors from a plane crash in the 1930s, one of whom was John Proud (you may have heard of the Prouds jewellery stores). There's a book I have which combines two of O'Reilly's tales - Green Mountains and Cullenbenbong. It includes the story of the rescue, but I actually prefer the tales of living in the Blue Mountains and Lamington National Park, especially a story about trying to capture a brumby which sounds awfully similar to "The Man From Snowy River". Bear in mind that AB Paterson was a lawyer in Sydney, so he quite likely heard the tales of the early days in the Blue Mountains. O'Reilly's writing style is easy to read and while his memories may be rose-tinted, they were very enjoyable to me.
