Cochem City on the banks of the River Mosel in Germany as seen from the Cochem Castle. The source of the river is in France where it is known as the
Moselle.

Nice shot which brings back memories of nearly 20 years ago when I did a lot of walking in that area. One memory I have (didn't take a pic) was of a Fosters beer can lying on the banks of the Moselle. A nice Australian touch.

Very cool--if you're still in the neighborhood, I found Trier to be fascinating as well, especially with its famous Roman ruins like the Porta Nigra. Of course, a lot of the sites are kind of like Abraham Lincoln's ax (which had its handle replaced twice and the head only once)--courtesy of the 8th and 9th Army Air Force.

A man of the finer joys of life you are. You have identified one of your likings. Now I wonder if you have learned to appreciate the other two as in Johann Strauss' Viennese Waltz "Wine, Woman and Song".

I don't follow, you have to explain this to me please.

...and no doubt enjoyed some light refreshments in the form of a few glasses of Riesling on the way.

Thanks for posting.

Ha, I only meant that Trier got hammered late in the war as the Allies tried to blunt the German salient, so it's always a question of just how much of the "old" building you're looking at actually dates to the year mentioned on the plaque outside. (FWIW, "Lincoln's axe" is a famous variant of Plutarch's "ship of Theseus" paradox: Ship of Theseus - Wikipedia.)

Beautiful country, though, even if I like my wines red and beer you can cut with a knife...

Hi
Thanks for the explanation. While I am vaguely familiar with Abe Lincoln's ax I did not make the connection, far too subtle for me.

I should say another return trip to this region is called for, if not for the uniquely characteristic Mosel "Stein Spätburgunder trocken" (a dry Pinot Noir) It is a Pinot Noir growing on the rocky slate hills where most of the Riesling is grown. It has a ruby colour, is not as "gutsy" as some of the Pinot Noirs" can be, particularly those from Australia but very good in its own right. If you can find one in your local liquor store, buy a bottle I am sure you will love it.

Cheers

I was there in the mid 60s. West Germany was returned to its own government in 1959 so there was no longer an occupation. We and our other allies were there to deter the Cold War from becoming a hot war.

Is there still a U.S. Army Garrison in Wiesbaden ?

I know one comes across a fair few U.S. expats living there.

Cheers

Wiesbaden was the US Air Forces Europe headquarters from 1945 until 1973 when the US Army headquarters moved in and the Air Force moved to Ramstein. The air base was a combined army/air force base until 1993. So yes, there are Americans still serving in Wiesbaden.
