Thanks for the explanation. While I am vaguely familiar with Abe Lincoln's ax I did not make the connection, far too subtle for me.
I should say another return trip to this region is called for, if not for the uniquely characteristic Mosel "Stein Spätburgunder trocken" (a dry Pinot Noir) It is a Pinot Noir growing on the rocky slate hills where most of the Riesling is grown. It has a ruby colour, is not as "gutsy" as some of the Pinot Noirs" can be, particularly those from Australia but very good in its own right. If you can find one in your local liquor store, buy a bottle I am sure you will love it.
