Big, Bad and Blue

Yesterday, at a Porsche Club concours in Kemah, I was fortunate to come upon this Porsche 918, a hybrid supercar the company produced in limited numbers 3 or 4 years ago. The 918, all of which were sold before the first one was manufactured, set back the buyer around a million bucks US. According to Hagerty's valuation tool, these things go about 1.7 million now.

This is the second one of these cars that I've seen (the first at the Houston auto show), and the first I've been able to approach closely.

Very nice! And is that a 959 to the left of it? In 1st and 4th image.

I’m kind of luck I live within 15 minutes of a McLaren, Porsche and Maserati dealers and have seen some great cars on the road. P1,918 still looking for my first LaFerrari.

I have wanted a Porsche since I was a kid. I look every once in a while at the 718 Cayman, 911 just out of my price range right now but one day.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures! And you're right, that is a 959 you spotted. These are very rare, especially in the U.S., so it's the first one I've ever seen in the flesh. I'll be posting a series on the car in a day or two.

I got the itch for a Porsche when I was a poor grad student back in 1970 and drove a 912. I didn't scratch that itch until shortly after I retired in 2009 when I bought a slightly-used 2008 (987.1) Boxster 2.7, which I replaced in 2013 with a new-generation (981.1) Boxster 3.4. I enjoyed that car for three years until I traded it for my current 911 Carrera Cabrio in the spring of 2016. One thing to keep in mind is that slightly-used Porsches, with certified warranties, are often available with very low mileage and are - of course - drastically less expensive than a new one; my first Boxster was such a car. I bought my current 911, a 2015 model, brand new but "stale" in early 2016 when 2017 911s were already in dealers' show rooms and Houston's most recent oil bust was badly hurting luxury car sales. As a result, I was able to get my car for the fully depreciated price of a pre-owned 2015. These things come along more often than you might think and you can spot 'em if you keep an eye out.

What an impressive series, my friend!
I won't mention the name Porsche to my wife ... you know, she prefers "real" horses ... though the price tag is close to a good pre-owned Porsche and maintenance may even be more expensive

Hey, buddy, thanks much.

You might try whispering the "P-Word" quietly in her ear.

Great shots of a beautiful car - I've read about these cars but I've never seen one, so thanks for posting.

I can't afford it, and - even if I could - my wife would kill me.

A lovely series Jer. Having an affinity with the subject comes through in you images buddy. Very well taken.

BTW, you mentioned $1,700,000 USD for that beauty, with the dismal exchange rate, that is $2,200,000 Australian.

That is amazing. $1.7 million USD for an awesome piece of work. I couldn't even afford the insurance on that girl. Thanks so much for a wonderfully interesting series.

Thanks, Peter, for the very kind words!

Either here or down under, it's way more than I can afford!

Thank you, Tony. The sad part about high-value, classic cars is that they are worth so much, people drive them only rarely.
